How much does car photography cost per vehicle?

5 min read

Dealers on the DealerRefresh forum report paying $5 to $50 a car for someone to photograph their inventory in 2024 to 2026, and most of the rates they post fall between $10 and $20 a car. Vendors that publish prices charge $12 to $22 a vehicle for a managed photo service, and AI background tools charge 19 to 39 cents a photo. A photo booth's hardware alone works out to about $10 to $23 a car at 60 cars a month. In Clearcoat, a car's exterior set of 5 Showroom photos costs 5 Credits: $1.25 on the Studio Plan, or about $0.83 on Studio+ or Ultra. Interior and detail shots go on the listing as taken and cost nothing in Clearcoat. The two figures pay for different work, though: a photographer's fee includes the shooting, and with Clearcoat your own team still takes the lot photos.

What dealers pay a photographer per car

These are the per-car rates dealers and photographers posted on DealerRefresh, with the year each was posted. Rates depend on the photo count and extras such as window stickers, video or editing.

One AI photo vendor's 2026 guide puts a photographer's lot visit at $40 to $150 a vehicle, without a source. The rates dealers posted for their own stores are well below that.

What photo services and AI tools publish per car

Few vendors publish a price. These are the published figures in 2026, with the per-car cost worked out where the price is per photo or per month:

ServicePublished pricePer car
Dealer Image ProMost dealerships pay $12 to $22 a vehicle, it says, with at least 50 vehicles a month and $999 setup; your team shoots with an iPhone it supplies$12 to $22
Dealermade Photo Car App$750 a month for up to 40 vehicles$18.75 at 40 cars
carbackground.ai$0.39 a photo (75 a month) to $0.27 (750)$1.35 to $1.95 for 5 photos
WheelStage$0.38 a photo (50-photo pack) to $0.19 (5,000)$0.95 to $1.90 for 5 photos

The managed services include more than the images, such as editing, DMS integration or window stickers, so check what a quote covers before comparing it with a per-photo tool.

What a photo booth costs per car

A photo booth is the other way to get a showroom look. Our comparison of booths and apps worked out the cost at 60 cars a month. A rented turntable studio at $1,350 a month comes to $22.50 a car. A $38,000 booth spread over five years comes to $10.56 a car. Those figures cover the hardware only, before the room, the build and the staff time.

What Clearcoat costs per car

In Clearcoat, each finished photo costs one Credit, whatever the Showroom, plate setting or format. A typical exterior set is 5 photos: front three-quarter, front, side profile, rear three-quarter and rear, as in our shot list.

PlanPrice per Credit5 exterior photosCars a month at 5 photos
Studio, $25 for 100 Credits$25 / 100 = $0.255 x $0.25 = $1.25100 / 5 = 20
Studio+, $50 for 300 Credits$50 / 300 = about $0.1675 x $0.167 = about $0.83300 / 5 = 60
Ultra, $100 for 600 Credits$100 / 600 = about $0.1675 x $0.167 = about $0.83600 / 5 = 120

Prices are in US dollars, before tax. Interior and detail shots, such as the dashboard, seats, odometer and engine bay, use no Credits. Clearcoat is made for exterior photos of the whole car, and interiors go on the listing as photographed. A photo that fails returns its Credit, so the bill follows the finished photos you get. More on Credits and Plans is in how much AI car photography costs per photo, and the current Plans are on the pricing page.

How to compare a photographer with Clearcoat

Compare like with like. A photographer's $12 to $20 pays for a person to walk the lot, shoot the exterior and the interior, and often upload the photos. Clearcoat's $0.83 to $1.25 pays for the finished exterior photos only. Someone on your team still walks around the car and takes the lot photos, on a phone or a camera.

So the cost of doing it with Clearcoat is your team's time to shoot each car plus the Credits. Dealers on the same forum put in-house shooting at $5 a car for salespeople in 2024 and $12 a car for a dedicated photographer in 2026. If your team already photographs every car on the lot, Clearcoat adds $0.83 to $1.25 a car for a showroom exterior set, with no booth and no moving the car. If you pay a vendor today, compare its fee with your own team's time to shoot plus the Credits.

To see the result on one of your own cars first, start with 6 free credits, no credit card required. That covers one car's 5 exterior photos, with one Credit to spare.
